Kaufman & Canoles was created January 1, 1982 through the merger of two Norfolk firms, Kaufman & Oberndorfer and Canoles, Mastracco, Martone, Barr and Russell. The Kaufman firm was established by Charles L. Kaufman in 1919; the Canoles firm by Leroy T. Canoles, Jr. in 1951. The firm, obviously rich in history, has a progressive attitude toward growth and effective legal service.

Recruiting

We have always subscribed to the theory that our strength is derived from our people. Kaufman & Canoles is a place where individuals enjoy what they do and the people with whom they work. It's a place where longevity is the rule, not the exception.

With seven offices in diverse locations throughout Virginia, our attorneys and staff have the choice to live and work in a metropolitan area by the sea, where the culture is rich – or a more rural area, steeped in history and "southern hospitality."

Kaufman & Canoles has a nondiscriminatory hiring policy, as well as an affirmative action policy for minority hiring and retention.

Summer Associates

We provide our summer associates with a realistic view of what an associate's life at our firm is all about. Work assignments come from several areas of the firm's practice and our summer associates rotate assignments allowing them the opportunity to work with a variety of attorneys. Summer associates attend courtroom proceedings, client conferences, closings, depositions and firm sponsored seminars. Kaufman & Canoles summer associates are matched with lawyer mentors to enhance their professional development and assist them in the relational aspects of the firm.

Because we are located in the heart of a resort destination, unique summer outings such as boating, Triple A baseball, arena football, concerts, theater, and outdoor activities are part of our summer program. Our summer associates experience all aspects of life at Kaufman & Canoles, hard work and all, so that decisions regarding future full-time employment can be easily decided. Our summer associates like our philosophy of hard work and great rewards.
