Chris Smythe Named New Executive Director at Kaufman & Canoles

March 2025 - Kaufman & Canoles is pleased to announce that Chris Smythe has been named the firm’s new Executive Director. 

Mr. Smythe is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and the University of Virginia School of Law. He began his career clerking for The Honorable John A. MacKenzie, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Norfolk and later practiced law in Charlotte, North Carolina with Parker Poe. After several years in legal practice, Mr. Smythe transitioned to the business sector, earning an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business in 2001. He then joined Landmark Communications in Norfolk, working in its New Ventures group and several portfolio companies for eight years. Most recently, he served as President of a regional home medical equipment and complex rehab supplier based in Norfolk, where he spent the last 16 years. 

The Executive Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm and its affiliated entities. He reports directly to the firm’s President & CEO and works with the President and the Executive Committee to facilitate the firm’s growth and financial health.

“Chris has strong skills in all aspects of running a business, and as a former attorney has an understanding of lawyers and the law firm environment,” said President and CEO, Jason Davis. “We are very excited about the future of the firm with Chris leading our outstanding administrative team.”
