John E. Holloway and Ryan T. Gibson Join Kaufman & Canoles

July 2021 - Kaufman & Canoles is pleased to announce that John E. Holloway and Ryan T. Gibson have joined the firm’s Norfolk office as Of Counsel in the Litigation and Maritime Law Practice Groups. Mr. Holloway, who will Chair the firm’s Maritime Law Practice Group, received his B.S. from the Virginia Military Institute and his J.D. from the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School, where he was the editor-in-chief of the Law Review. Mr. Gibson received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Mr. Holloway handles a wide range of maritime matters, including litigation, transactional, and regulatory matters.  He has been recognized as a preeminent maritime attorney by Best Lawyers in America, 2007–2021, Virginia Super Lawyers, 2007-2021, Virginia Business Legal Elite, 2014-2015, 2018, and he is AV® Rated by Martindale-Hubbell.  He has been published by the Tulane Maritime Law Journal, the Journal of Commerce, and The Sewanee Review, among others.

Mr. Gibson handles a wide range of maritime matters, including litigation, transactional, and regulatory matters. As a former Deputy Commissioner of Maritime Affairs for one of the world’s largest ship registries, Mr. Gibson’s practice also includes advising clients on vessel registration, vessel documentation, and international regulatory and compliance issues affecting the shipping industry, including International Maritime Organization and International Labour Organization conventions, tax transparency standards, anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism standards, and sanction and embargo laws.

Kaufman & Canoles’ Maritime Law attorneys have substantial expertise resolving maritime disputes, often by settlement, but also by trial or arbitration. The team attorneys also handle transactional and regulatory matters, including representation of banks, vessel operators and shippers on a variety of regulatory matters. 

Kaufman & Canoles’ Litigation practice group trial experience is vast, with an impressive record of success in many trials of extreme complexity before juries and judges, in both federal and state courts. The team is skilled at all forms of alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation, and frequently counsel clients on how best to avoid litigation.
