January 2025 - Kaufman & Canoles is pleased to announce that Conway H. Sheild, III has joined the firm’s Newport News office.

Mr. Sheild is Of Counsel in the firm’s Newport News office and a member of the firm’s Real Estate Strategies Group and Commercial Section. He comes to the firm with over 50 years of law experience. He has served on several committees for The Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar and also served as the President of the Newport News Bar Association.

His practice focuses on aiding clients in a variety of areas, including commercial banking and business transaction work. Mr. Sheild has represented owners and lending institutions in both residential and commercial real estate development. He has also represented a variety of interests, including purchasers, sellers, automobile dealers, real estate companies, museums, utility companies, industrial development authorities, banks, and mortgagees.

A United States Army veteran, Mr. Sheild received his B.A. from Washington & Lee University and his J.D. from Washington & Lee University School of Law. Prior to joining Kaufman & Canoles, he most recently practiced law with Jones, Blechman, Woltz & Kelly, P.C.

Kaufman & Canoles’ Commercial Section is comprised of professionals who offer practical experience in organizing and structuring business entities, including joint ventures, proprietorships, S corporations, C corporations, limited liability, companies, partnerships, and non-profit organizations. The team offers advice in franchising, transactional matters, sales & distribution, formation of business entities, and general business planning.

The Kaufman & Canoles Real Estate Strategies Group is composed of attorneys and other professionals who focus on transactional, development, and land use matters and related areas such as environmental law and tax planning. The team provides comprehensive representation to its real estate clients, using extensive legal knowledge and business insights to aid in the transactions process while managing risks.
