40th Annual Employment Law Update – Hampton

Sometimes it seems employers are awash with new employment laws and regulations that require effective HR help to navigate. This year’s 40th ELU is designed to update employers on developments like the new proposed EEOC guidance on workplace harassment and new wage-hour regulations from the DOL. Officials from these and other relevant government agencies along with the K & C Employment Law Team will help employers avoid risk in an everchanging legal environment. We will even have a “Top Gun” employee lawyer provide insights on how he decides which employers he will sue. Attendees can also earn up to 6 credit hours toward PHR and SPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and 6 PDCs toward the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCPA.

Employment Law 101 — Batten Down the Hatches

This workshop will provide essential baseline information on the most frequently encountered federal and Virginia employment laws. Attendees will learn legal and practical ways for employers to avoid potential liability and are encouraged to bring their most challenging questions.

Ethics for HR Professionals — Check Your HR Compass

A dynamic presenter will present a highly interactive and enlightening workshop on workplace ethics confronted by employers. Attendees will learn how they can make the workplace more ethical and effectively deal with ethical dilemmas. This session will also help HR professionals meet annual ethics requirements for recertification.

Effective Workplace Harassment Investigations — EEOC on “Watch”

Workplace harassment claims remain a high concern for employers as well as the EEOC. This has led the EEOC to propose new guidance for employers on avoiding all forms of harassment. A current District Director from the EEOC and a member of the K&C Employment Team will provide attendees with tips on detecting, addressing and preventing concerns that could mature into litigation.

12:00 – 1:30 Lunch — Tips from the Captains
Attendees will enjoy lunch then the national EEOC Director of Field Management Programs, Tom Colclough, and the EEOC Charlotte District Director, Betsy Rader, will provide helpful tips to employers on how to effectively handle EEOC discrimination charges.

Layoffs/Restructuring — Anchors Away

During tough economic times, organizations often implement layoffs and restructuring plans. Attendees will be provided guidance on avoiding legal risks when making tough employment decisions.

Wage-Hour Law — Paymaster Rules

This session will discuss federal and Virginia wage-hour requirements, including the DOL’s new overtime exemption regulations. Our presenters will provide advice on complying with increasingly complex legal requirements affecting how employees must be paid.

CLOSING SESSION — Bon Voyage

We will provide a recap of the day and the EEOC Director of Field Management Programs, Thomas Colclough, will be on hand to provide some insights for what HR professionals can expect from the EEOC in the upcoming year.
